Common Questions

What buyers ask before configuring

Straight answers on sizing, materials, regulators, and ASME compliance — drawn from decades of configuring Binks pressure tanks for industrial coating operations.

What size Binks pressure tank do I need?

Match the tank to your shift consumption. Up to 5 gal/shift → 2 or 5-gallon tank. Up to 10 gal → 10-gallon. Up to 15 gal → 15-gallon. Up to 30 gal → 30-gallon. Up to 60 gal → 60-gallon. For plural-component materials, size the tank to your pot life instead so you don't waste mixed material.

Galvanized (183G) vs. stainless (183S) — which should I choose?

183G galvanized works for solventborne coatings and costs less. 183S stainless is required for waterborne coatings, high-acid primers, and any application where rust contamination from tank walls would be a QA issue. Both series share identical sizes, pressure ratings, and regulator/agitator options — the difference is the material contacting the coating.

Do I need an ASME-certified pressure tank for commercial use?

If you run a commercial shop with liability insurance, yes. OSHA, NFPA 33, and most commercial insurance underwriters require ASME-certified pressure vessels for spray application. Every Binks pressure tank carries ASME certification and ships with documentation — important for fire marshal and underwriter audits.

When do I need a 15:1 gear-reduced agitator?

Use 15:1 gear reduction for waterborne, plural-component, high-viscosity, metallic, or mica-flake coatings — any material that settles, separates, or is sensitive to air entrainment. Direct drive works for low-viscosity, stable solventborne materials in smaller tanks. Gear reduction is gentler, quieter, and prevents air whip-in.

Can I upgrade a single-regulated tank to double regulation later?

Yes. The Binks 85-469 conversion kit field-upgrades any 183G or 183S single-regulated tank to double regulation (0–100 psi fluid + 0–60 psi atomizing air). You don't need to replace the tank — many shops start with single regulation and upgrade as material complexity grows.

What's the difference between "single sensitive" and standard regulation?

Extra-sensitive regulators provide fine control in the 0–30 psi range, versus standard regulators that cover 0–100 psi. Extra-sensitive is the right choice for very low-viscosity materials, short spray runs, or precision finishing where you need pressure control at the low end. Both are available in single and double configurations.
