Robot vs. Reciprocator

When Do You Need
Robot Coating?

Reciprocators move guns up and down on a fixed vertical axis. They’re efficient for consistent part shapes that only need linear travel — fencing, panels, profiles, and extrusions. For these applications, the PEA-X1 automatic gun on a reciprocator is the right choice.

Robots add multi-axis movement. A 6-axis robot can follow part contours, maintain optimal gun distance across curved surfaces, coat the inside and outside of complex assemblies in one pass, and dynamically adjust spray angle by zone. When paired with 3D scanning, the robot generates coating paths automatically for each part shape.

The PER-X1 gives you the full X1 gun platform on a robot arm — same 100kV cascade, same nozzle ecosystem, same coating quality — with purpose-built mounting and cabling for robotic integration.

Choose Robot Coating When

Varied Part GeometryMix of shapes on the same line. Robot adapts path per part instead of one-size-fits-all reciprocator travel.
Complex 3D SurfacesCurved, deep-recessed, or multi-surface parts that require angled approach and dynamic distance control.
Inside + Outside CoatingParts that need coating on internal and external surfaces in one pass — cabinets, enclosures, housings.
3D Scanning IntegrationAutomatic path generation from part scans. Robot adjusts coating path per workpiece without manual programming.
Twin Gun ThroughputTwo PER-X1 guns on one robot arm doubles output per pass. Not possible with standard reciprocator mounting.
Cobot ApplicationsFANUC CRX10iA and similar cobots for semi-automated cells with operator collaboration. Dedicated PER-X1 adapter available.

Reciprocator Is Better When

Consistent part shapes needing only vertical gun travel (fencing, panels, profiles)
High-volume single-shape production where path complexity is low
Budget priority — reciprocators are simpler, lower capital cost

Configuration Space

PER-X1 Configuration Map

The PER-X1 starts as a basic gun (2423084) and is completed with your choice of robot bracket, cable, and nozzle configuration. Every X1 accessory is compatible.

Robot Mounting

Single, Twin, Inside, Outside

Six bracket options cover the major robot mounting configurations. Inside = nozzle faces the robot arm centerline (typical for booth-interior robots). Outside = nozzle faces outward (for robots approaching from exterior). Twin = two guns per robot arm.

Single Inside (SI)

2434364

One gun, nozzle inward. Standard for booth robots spraying toward a conveyor or turntable.

Single Outside (SO)

2434468

One gun, nozzle outward. For robots that approach the workpiece from outside the coating zone.

Single Outside (Lesta)

2434683

Dedicated adapter for Lesta painting robots. Direct bolt-on to Lesta end-of-arm interface.

Single Outside (CRX10iA)

2448589

For FANUC CRX10iA collaborative robots. Enables cobot-based powder coating cells with operator collaboration.

Twin Inside (TI)

2434467

Two guns, nozzles inward. Doubles output per robot pass. Each gun requires its own cable and control channel.

Twin Outside (TO)

2434678

Two guns, nozzles outward. For exterior-approach robots needing dual output per pass.

The X1 Ecosystem Advantage

If your facility runs both robot and reciprocator lines, or if your operators use manual guns for touch-up alongside automated coating, the X1 platform means one nozzle inventory serves everything. Flat spray nozzles, deflector cones, CoronaStar, electrode holders, extensions — buy once, use across PER-X1 robot guns, PEA-X1 automatic guns, and PEM-X1 manual guns.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Robot or reciprocator?

Robots for varied geometry, complex shapes, multi-axis paths, and 3D scanning integration. Reciprocators for consistent shapes with simple vertical travel. Most facilities with complex parts benefit from robot coating; high-volume simple parts run better on reciprocators. Many operations use both.

What robots are supported?

Dedicated adapters for Lesta (2434683) and FANUC CRX10iA (2448589). Standard SI/SO brackets work with most industrial robots. Contact CET with your robot model for adapter confirmation.

Twin guns on one robot?

Yes. TI (2434467) and TO (2434678) brackets mount two PER-X1 guns on one arm. Doubles powder output per pass. Each gun needs its own cable and control channel. Useful for high-throughput lines or coating both sides simultaneously.

Shared parts with PEA-X1 and PEM-X1?

All X1 nozzles, electrode holders, deflector cones, CoronaStar, extensions, and accessories are shared. Only the robot brackets and cables (2.5m/6m) are PER-X1 specific. One accessory inventory for your entire X1 fleet.

What about 3D scanning?

Wagner offers Dynamic 3D coating systems where a 3D scanner detects workpiece geometry and generates robot coating paths automatically. The PER-X1 integrates into these systems. Contact CET for 3D scanning and dynamic coating system specification.

Where are spare parts?

Shared X1 parts on the PEA-X1/PER-X1 spare parts page. For robot brackets and PER-specific cables, contact CET directly.
